The ManJosh Willis is The Great Bearded Reef

My name is Josh Willis and I am applying to be the first ever Island Caretaker in the The Great Barrier Reef.

I am 24 years old and I currently work for an international skatepark manufacturing company based in the Unites States.

I know what you are thinking... "why should I vote for you?" Let me assure you, I am the best man for the job. Here are my top ten:

  • I am a reliable and hard worker with solid values.
  • I am a people person through and through.
  • Every good Island Caretaker has a beard. See proof here, here and here.
  • I have traveled to over 12 countries and counting.
  • I have hosted and emceed numerous events with colleges and other organizations.
  • I am literally selling my plasma to pay for this site. Now that is commitment!
  • I have a beard, which is a must for any Island Caretaker (see number 3).
  • I am skilled in creative writing, recruiting, public speaking, promotions and networking.
  • I tracked alligators in the Florida Everglades in high school. Seriously. I did.
  • I am just as good a swimmer as Michael Phelps. And to top it off, I can pass a urine test.
Joshua Willis, is the man for the job.

    The Gigthegig

Tourism Queensland has created this new position. The official title is "Island Caretaker" and it is only going to be around for 6 months. So instead of going through the normal job application and interview process, they decided to hold a contest to see who would fill the spot. The first 30,000 people who sign up are in the running. You can find out more here.

The contest is set up in three rounds... the first round ended on February 22nd. Out of the potential 30,000 people who applied only 50 will be chosen for the Short List. Out of the short list only eleven people will be chosen. Then out of that eleven, only one. There is a detailed account of the process on the contest's site. Oh and did I mention that it pays AUD$150,000?!

So I've built this site to help me win. I want (and need) to get as much exposure as possible. I am also looking for ways to stand out from the rest of the thousands of other applicants. My friends and I have all teamed together to help me do that. I am shamelessly promoting myself, and at the same time looking to show the folks holding the contest that I am not only the best applicant, but I know how to stand out in a crowd.

    The Wonderthewonder

    • The Great Barrier Reef is truly Australia's Wonder from Down Under.  You may hear others refer to this submarine jungle as "the blue outback," or rightly so, "the crown jewel of the gold coast."
    • This coral highway runs along the Northeastern coast of Australia and is over 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) long, and contains hundreds of peaceful islands.
    • With a temperature that never drops below 20 C (68 F), it's a must-see year round.
    • On any given day you can go surfing, whale watching, scuba-diving, snorkeling, and shallow-water night diving. Or if you don't want to get wet, take a tour in one of the glass bottom boats and partake of beauty and wonder under the water.
    • One can also cuddle koalas or hunt for aboriginal rock art.
    • It's perfect for the needed relaxing get-a-way.
